I recently heard the term “God-sized dream”. Referring to the fact that in our strength and control dreams are nearly impossible to attain. They scare us. They feel out of reach. We think or talk about them…but do we actually take the steps to reach them? I’m guilty of allowing fear and doubt to creep in. But if I recognize my dream is “God-sized” I see that He is the only one who can bring them to fruition. Fully trusting, fully believing, and knowing He will come through. He always does.
As a little girl I was terrified to stay the night away from home. I would dream of someday being able to have a sleepover at a friend’s house. I would dream of someday leaving the country on missions. I never thought it would happen, but my God-sized dreams came through with God’s strength.
Last week Jennie Allen, a well-known speaker, teacher and ministry leader released a free download of her 2020 Dream Guide. Being the dreamer that I am, I printed two copies and met a friend for coffee. I hadn’t warned her, but I knew she would gladly join in. We drank our coffee while we sat silently. Jennie’s guide invited us to reflect on all the growth God has provided over the past year. Then to look forward, to dream of all we trust the Lord has planned for next year. When we finished our guides, we shared our dreams with one another and spoke life into them.
Big dreams used to scare me. I was a dreamer who was afraid of her own dreams. Until I realized I needed to let go. To not give up, but to let go. To place them in the hands of the One who can make them happen. Dreams are mentioned in the Bible nearly a hundred times. I personally believe God uses dreams to speak to us, to direct our paths and to get His plans set in motion.
During college I dreamed of being in vocational ministry, and I so badly wanted to be back home near family. I didn’t see an opportunity for a paid-ministry position near our community. I never thought it would happen, but my God-sized dreams came through with God’s strength.
I encourage you to take some time to sit down, quiet yourself and ask the Lord what His dreams for you are. They might seem too big. They will probably be out of your comfort-zone. In my experience growth doesn’t come from staying where we are comfortable. I’m chasing God-sized dreams…are you coming with me? One of the great things about God is that He is always available. We don’t have to wait for January 1st to put plans into action. He welcomes us to step out in faith, right here, right now. What a blessing.
