We are well into the Christmas season. I’ve been reading from an Advent book called Love Came down at Christmas. The words of Christmas songs are ringing in my ears. Another tender Tennessee Christmas, Joy to The World, Mary Did You Know?. Christmas is in the air all around us. We see it in the stores and the lit up neighborhoods. Love is in the Christmas movies and we hear it in the Christmas songs.
Why is Christmas all about love? Because love came down at Christmas. The meaning of Christmas is in the message of Christmas. God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16
1 Corinthians 13 gives us a great description of love. There was a word that stuck out to me as I read those familiar words written by the Apostle Paul. Kind. Love is kind. Mary, a good friend of mine had posted on her Facebook page for some time “Hustle Kindness.” Hustle is an interesting word, especially when paired with kindness. One definition is to promote energetically and aggressively. Aggressively and energetically promote kindness. Hustle Kindness. I really like that.
What does kindness look like, you ask? Kindness is being caring, thoughtful, gentle, generous, treating others better than they deserve. It’s not always easy to be kind to nice people, let alone those who truly don’t deserve it.
Within an hour of sharing this on the 5-1-1, I encountered a lady at the Front Porch going the wrong way as she was looking to drop off stuff at the Thrift Shop. Sorry to say, I didn’t give her any slack and didn’t even think about kindness. (insert sad-face emoji here) Kindness is not spectacular. It isn’t showy. It’s the little things. It’s moving out of the way for the lady going the wrong way, it’s taking in the shopping cart for someone, it’s saying hi to someone you don’t know.
Has anyone shown kindness to you? Do you remember how good it feels?
Being kind is one way that love works. This Christmas season, love is in the air, so go hustle some kindness.
Jesus Christ. He is kind. He is love. And he is the reason for this season of Christmas.
