People of Prayer

Being a people of prayer in private and corporate settings to know God deeper.  This is one of our goals for the present church year.    How do we expand and enrich our prayer life?

Take time to pray.  This is the first step.  As you look at your schedule, when is a good time to get away from the busyness of life and spend time praying.

Where should I pray?  Anytime and anyplace. When we talk to God, we never get a busy signal.  He is always ready to listen to us.

What do I pray?  “Pray then like this, ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.  Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’  Matthew 6:9-13

In Matthew 6 Jesus shows us how to pray.  Prayer is praising God for who He is and how He has shown His love to us by sending His Son Jesus who died for us so we could be saved.  We praise God for His protection. I often have to think of the many times that God protects me and I don’t even realize it.

Prayer is thanking God for the many ways He blesses us, comforts us, disciplines us and walks with us.

Prayer is lifting up people and what is on our heart to Him.  Have a concern? Share it with God.  Know people who are struggling? Lift them up to God in prayer.

Prayer is reading scripture.  When we read scripture, God speaks to us and it helps us focus.  It is easy to get distracted.  Scripture helps to focus us.

Prayer is listening.  It is hard to be quiet sometimes.  Our minds are racing 100 miles an hour.  God will bring thoughts and scripture into our minds. He will speak to us through the Holy Spirit.

How long should I pray? Start with a short period of time and build over time.  Any period of time praying is valuable no matter how long or short.

Why should I pray? We pray because it connects us to God and there is power in prayer.  It is something that Jesus modeled for us.  The God of the universe wants to communicate to us so that a close personal relationship with Him can be built.

All great acts of revival in human history began with prayer.  The Young Adult center that we started in Holmes County began when two different Bible studies began praying for an outreach to our young adults.  God put the pieces into place.

One of the ways that we want to continue to be people of prayer is to have a prayer time in the sanctuary once a month during the Sunday School hour.  October 6 will be our first one, come join us. Come and pray.
